Professor Cannon isn't the only member of academia's football tendency to have received an accolade recently. Stefan Szymanski of Imperial College, who has applied "company architecture" theories to explaining the relative success of different clubs, gives his name to a character in Swansea lecturer James Hawes's novel Rancid Aluminium. Not, admittedly, a major character - the corpse at a funeral.
