Lecturers' union Natfhe has lost its High Court case against the Government's changes to teachers' pensions policy. Natfhe argued that the reform of the Teachers Superannuation Scheme (TSS) by former education secretary Gillian Shephard was illegal under pension law. The present Government contested Natfhe's claim, and won. Mrs Shephard transferred the cost of early retirements from the TSS to individual colleges, which Natfhe said would cost institutions millions and would increase the number of compulsory redundancies.
