College careers advisors are failing students who are seeking employment because they divert more resources to those who want to go on to higher education, according to a three-year study by the Further Education Funding Council. The FEFC inspectorate's Careers Education and Guidance Good Practice Report, published today identifies much good practice, but it also highlights cases where careers advice is not impartial, and where careers centres are under-resourced. Part-time students were also losing out, it said. "Generally, colleges have effective systems for helping students to gain places in higher education," the report said. "They are less effective in helping students who are seeking employment."
