* Education research costs millions of pounds a year, yet politicians and teachers seem to find little in the results, says Brunel University's Alan Smithers.

Criticising education research at the British Association conference this week, Professor Smithers said: "Education is about people. It is a complex human activity which only on occasions can be studied scientifically."
