Shocked of Swansea

December 12, 1997

STAFF at Swansea Institute were astonished to see the headline "Swansea Institute gives up its attempt to remain independent" (THES, November 28). We are not "attempting" to "survive alone" and we have not "abandoned" a "battle for survival".

The institute is considering several options, including independence, collaboration and merger. A working group examined these options and produced an interim report which was used as the source for the story. Trade union and other responses to the interim report are being considered. The final report has yet to be presented to the governing body.
