Appointments

University of Stirling

Diana Rigg has been appointed as chancellor of the university from August 1998. Miss Rigg is an actress and Dame of the British Empire, patron of Baby Life Supports Systems and the Stirling and District Association for Mental Health.

Giles Dove, development officer at the University of St Andrews and former editor of the university's annual report, has been appointed director of public relations from January 1, 1998.

Inns of Court School of Law

The school has appointed the following specialists: Lois Dombek, aviation law; Hilda O'Connor, European Community law and civil litigation; Sarwan Singh, social services law, local government law and mental health; Alister Turtle, criminal law with special interest in martial courts and advocacy.

De Montfort University

Brian Field, former head of the school of the built environment, professor of planning and development, has been appointed director of academic and curriculum provision.

University of Surrey

The following have been appointed to readerships: G. Parry, education, former senior lecturer in the Institute of Education, University of London; P. Dawes, marketing, associate professor at Adelaide Graduate Business School; A. Lobo, has been appointed part-time medical director for five years.

University of Wales, Bangor

Eifion Karens, circuit judge, member for Wales of the Crawford Committee on Broadcasting Coverage, deputy lieutenant for Clwyd and former deputy chairman of the university's council, has succeeded John Howard Davies as chairman.

London Business School

John Quelch, Sebastian S. Kresge professor of marketing at Harvard University's graduate school of business administration, will succeed George Bain as principal of the school on December 31.

Brunel University

John Wakeham, Conservative politician, peer and former secretary of state for energy and government chief whip, chairman of the Press Complaints Commission, has been appointed chancellor.

Economic and Social Research Council

Ronald Amann has been reappointed as chief executive and deputy chairman for a further period from October 1, 1998 to September 30, 2000.

Council for the Central Laboratory of Research Councils Ken Peach, professor of physics at the University of Edinburgh, on leave of absence as deputy leader of the particle physics experiments division at the European particle physics laboratory in Geneva, will succeed George Kalmust as director, particle physics of the council on January 5. He will be based at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire.

Humanities Research Board

Paul Langford will succeed John Laver as chairman of the Humanities Research Board of the British Academy on September 1, 1998. He is professor of modern history at Oxford University, fellow of the British Academy and a member of the Humanities Research Board.

Association of Commonwealth Universities

Membership of the council for 1997-98 is as follows:

Honorary Treasurer: Colin Maiden, New Zealand.

Immediate past chair: Brenda Gourley, vice chancellor and principal, University of Natal, South Africa.

Societe Internationale pour l'Etude de la Philosophie Medievale David Luscombe, Leverhulme personal research professor of medieval history at the University of Sheffield, has been elected president of the society until 2002.
