Fury over axing of geology at Aberystwyth

THE council of the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, has endorsed controversial proposals to axe single honours geology degrees at the university.

The restructuring of the Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences will result in the loss of eight jobs. This follows a call from students for a review of university governance and a vote of no confidence in the university's staff management strategy by the local Association of University Teachers. Students and lecturers were furious that recruitment to geology courses was stopped long before this week's decision. The university says existing geology students have a range of options to allow them to complete their degrees.
