A STEADILY increasing proportion of full-time higher education students are taking courses in further education colleges, according to the latest Scottish Office statistical bulletin. It shows that the proportion rose from 9 per cent in 1985/86 to 17 per cent in 1995/96. The number of full-time higher education students reached 145,634 in 1995/96, an increase of 2 per cent from the previous year, while the number of students taking part-time courses rose by 18 per cent to 69,570. The number of young Scots going on to higher education more than doubled in the decade from 1985 to 46 per cent.
