Copyright rules change

January 9, 1998

New UK regulations for the first time provide specific copyright protection for the information in databases. The regulations, which came into force on January 1, implement a European Community directive of March 11 1996. A "fair dealing" provision allows the use of material by way of illustration for non-commercial teaching and research.
