Doctors are hoping to gain a better understanding of the thought processes of schizophrenic patients thanks to a new research programme at London's Maudsley Hospital. People with schizophrenia have problems with language and thought, often hearing voices and experiencing delusions. Some patients have major difficulty communicating and their speech is disjointed and erratic. These speech problems which are deemed to be thought disorders form the basis of the new study. Gina Kuperburg will investigate whether the problems which thought-disordered schizophrenics suffer in distinguishing between sense and non-sense sentences are linked to brain function.
