"Socks would be sniffed, underpants would be turned inside out to get another few days out of them," is one student's response to a survey by Proctor and Gamble of student washing habits. The survey of 100 students at Durham University showed that students are sparing with washing powder - bad news for its manufacturer and university staff. Nearly half of students do their washing only once a month, and 6 per cent never do it.
Three-quarters take it home at the end of term. Proctor and Gamble said:
"We recruit a lot of graduates, and it became clear that the work ethic and discipline of a day-to-day routine was something a lot of people are not used to."
