The THES survey of vice chancellors' pay (February 6) contained three errors and one omission. Geoffrey Copland, vice chancellor and rector of the University of Westminster, did not receive a pay rise of 21 per cent between 1995-96 and 1996-97. Dr Copland took up his post as vice chancellor on January 1, 1996 and the salary reported for that year was the average of that paid to him as deputy rector and seven months as vice chancellor.
The increase on this salary was 13 per cent. His salary as vice chancellor increased by 0.675 per cent. The dean of the School of Pharmacy, University of London is A. Florence and not B. Roberts as stated. The principal of Wimbledon College of Art is C. Painter and not W. Furlong. The University of Sussex was left off the list. Gordon Conway's 1995-96 salary was Pounds 83,951. His 1996-97 salary was Pounds 97,669.
