They may have produced their best voting strength for years in the Lords, but the Liberal Democrats are still haunted by history. Among the 16 cross-benchers who helped give the government its majority, as Lords Tope, Russell and associates tried to sink tuition fees, were Viscount Tenby and Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor, both of whom are descendants of David Lloyd-George, the last Liberal to be prime minister.
