Bernard Ingham, journalist. broadcaster and chief spokesman at No 10 Downing Street during Margaret Thatcher's years as prime minister, visiting fellow of Newcastle University and member of the council of Huddersfield University, has undertaken the role of visiting professor in the university's business school.

University of Aberdeen

Philip Hannaford, former director of the Manchester research unit of the Royal College of General Practitioners and senior lecturer in the department of general practice at Manchester University, Grampian Health Board chair of primary care.

Green College, University of Oxford

The college has appointed David Elstein, chief executive of Channel 5 Broadcasting as its first News International visiting professor in broadcast media. His lecture/seminar series in the spring will cover the changing perception of the role of television in society in the postwar years.

University of Southampton

Pam Cook, editor of The Cinema Book, feminist film theorist, associate editor of the film journal Sight and Sound (1991-94) and senior lecturer at the University of East Anglia, has been appointed professor of film and media studies.
