Chris Llewellyn Smith, professor and director general of CERN (the European Laboratory for Particle Physics), will succeed Derek Roberts as provost on April 1, 1999.

University of Oxford

Museum of Natural History

Keith Thomson, distinguished scientist-in-residence at the New School for Social Research, New York and adjunct professor of geology at the University of Pennsylvania, has been appointed director of the museum from July 1 when he will also join the fellowship of Kellogg College.

ABRSM

The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (Publishing) Ltd. has appointed Leslie East, former publishing director at Novello & Co Ltd, director of music at Guildhall School of Music & Drama (1975-87) founder and chairman of the Early Music Network, as managing editor; and Rosie Welch, formerly music editor with Kevin Mayhew Ltd, as assistant music editor.

Royal Northern College of Music

The following have been appointed governors: Philip Ramsbottom, senior partner at KPMG in Manchester; Yan Pascal Tortelier, principal conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

University of Leeds

Pierre John Guillou, professor of surgery at St James's University Hospital, has been appointed dean of the university school of medicine.

Dartington College of Arts

Alice Hynes, former academic registrar at Kingston University, will succeed Eric Adams as vice principal (administration) on his retirement.
