The Higher Education Statistic Agency's findings for 1996/97 reveal that:
* 110,500 students obtained postgraduate qualifications, an increase of 5 per cent over 1995/96
* Of these, 88 per cent sat taught postgraduate courses, including 20,100 who sat the postgraduate certificate in education
* The remaining 12 per cent were on research-based programmes
