Scots reopen Odessa file

April 24, 1998

ST Andrews University's court is to review links with Odessa in Ukraine following a former student's allegations that she was raped on an exchange course in 1996. The woman is taking legal advice on suing St Andrews University for lack of care.

University secretary David Corner said there had been a review in 1996. The new probe would revisit findings and also communications between the Russian department and central management in relation to the alleged rape.

Joe Myles, a partner with the Dundee legal firm of Muir, Myles and Laverty, who is representing the woman, said he planned to seek counsel's opinion. "On the basis of what my client tells me about the conditions in Odessa and overall concerns about safety and lawlessness, it appears to me the university should have to bear some responsibility."
