Philip Hannaford, former director of the Manchester Research Unit of the Royal College of General Practitioners has been appointed to the Grampian Health Board chair of primary care.

University of Central Lancashire

Christopher Bovis, former deputy director of the institute of public law at the University of Hull, has been appointed professor of European business law; Peter Vincent-Jones, former reader at Sheffield Hallam University, has been appointed professor of law.

University of Bradford

Hadj Benkreira has been promoted to a personal chair in coating and polymer processing in the department of chemical engineering.

University of Brighton

Joel Kahn, professor at La Trobe University, chair in social anthropology; Alan Winters, professor and head of economics, University of Birmingham, chair in economics. The following readers have been promoted to professorships: Alun Howkins, social history; Robert Wagstaff, economics. Richard Wilkinson, senior fellow at Trafford Centre for Graduate Medical Education and Research, professorial fellow.
