Research at Southampton University should shine light on meningococcal meningitis - the bacteria that killed three Southampton University freshers earlier this academic year. It will examine the interaction between meninges, membranes that cover the brain and the spinal cord, and the meningococcal meningitis bacteria. Upon meeting the bacteria, meninges become inflamed and exert excess pressure on the brain.
