Honorary fellowships were awarded to: Seamus Heaney, poet laureate; Mary McAleese, president of Ireland, former law lecturer at Queen's University, Belfast.

Fellowships: Padraig Cunningham, computer science; Hilary Delany, legal science; Sean Duffy, medieval history; Frederick Falkiner, clinical microbiology; Maureen Junker-Kenny, Hebrew, biblical and theological studies; Stephen Matterson, English; Judith Mossman, Greek and Latin; Aibhe Ni Chasaide, centre for language and communication studies; Patrick Prendergast, mechanical and manufacturing engineering.

Professorial fellowship: Dennis Kennedy, centre for drama and theatre studies.

Liverpool John Moores University Honorary fellowships have been bestowed upon the following: Kamlesh Bahl, chairwoman of the Equal Opportunities Commission; Lewis Biggs, director of the Tate Gallery, Liverpool; James Dyson, product designer; John Harvey Jones, corporate consultant; Paul McCartney, musician and lead patron of the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts; Trevor McDonald, journalist and news presenter; Jonathon Porritt, programme director of Forum for the Future; Sue Ryder, baroness and founder of the Sue Ryder Foundation; Dame Cicely Saunders, founder and chair of the Hospice Movement.

A special corporate fellowship will be bestowed upon the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo.
