Royal Holloway, University of London

University of Wales, Cardiff

David Evans, formerly of the University of Wales Swansea, has been appointed to the chair in pure mathematics; Andrew Grubb, formerly King's College London, chair in medical law; John Turnbull, University of Leeds, chair in human resources management.

Wellcome Trust

Valerie Smith, marine microbiologist and reader in the school of environmental and evolutionary biology at the University of St Andrews has been awarded a Wellcome visiting professorship in the microbiological sciences and will lecture at Florida International University in Miami. The visiting professorship is administered by the American Society for Microbiology and sponsored by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.

City University

Visiting professors elected for three years in the business school: Tim Congdon, City economist, non-executive director of two investment trusts and of Highland Timber plc, member of the Treasury's panel (1992-97); Ann Robinson, former senior lecturer in politics at the University of Wales College, Cardiff, director general of the National Association of Pension Funds, member of the Royal Institute of International Affairs, the board of academic governors of Richmond College, London and the Commonwealth Institute; Nick Morris, co-founder and chief executive of London Economics, former deputy director of the Institute of Fiscal Studies; Bridget Rosewell, chairman and founder director of Business Strategies Ltd., chief economic adviser to the British Retail Consortium, member of the Treasury's select committee on monetary policy.

Winifred Crombie, member of staff in the university's school of Maaori and Pacific Development, has been appointed associate professor.

University of Leeds

Claire Hale, senior lecturer in nursing at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, Kathleen Raven chair of clinical nursing in the school of healthcare studies.
