University of Sunderland

David Puttnam, film maker, visiting professor and governor of the London School of Economics, has been appointed chancellor.

Dartington College of Arts

Josie Sutcliffe, former lecturer, has been appointed director of theatre.

Newman College

Hilary Robinson, senior lecturer in educational studies, has been appointed part-time senior research associate at St Edmund Hall, Cambridge; John Hopkin, LEA adviser with Birmingham, has been seconded to Newman to study the effects of the introduction of a literacy hour on the primary curriculum.

Economic History Society

P. K. O'Brien, senior research fellow at the Institute of Historical Research, University of Glasgow, has been elected president.

University of Central England

James Wilson, chairman of the Birmingham Housing Associations Liaison Committee (1984-86) and of Bournville College of Art (1984-87), fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and chief executive of Bournville Village Trust, has been appointed chairman and pro-chancellor, succeeding Frank Shaw.

Institute of Education

The institute's newly appointed deputy director of the social science research unit, David Gough, formerly professor of social welfare at Japan Women's University, has been appointed reader in social science.

Royal Northern College of Music

James Gourlay, director of brass studies has also been appointed acting head of the school for the academic year 1998-99; John Reynolds, senior tutor, has been appointed director of woodwind studies (1998-99); Edward Warren, assistant head of school, tutor in conducting studies and resident conductor of the college's orchestra; Ian Wright, senior tutor, will continue management of the percussion department.
