Those who think Britain is a trifle over-enthused by the World Cup are ill-advised to seek refuge in Latin America - there the intellectuals take the event as seriously as anyone else. Having scheduled his annual Mexico City seminar bringing together leading intellectuals and political figures for the weekend of July 11 and 12, historian Jorge Castaneda has been forced to postpone to the following weekend. "There was not much chance of getting anyone from Brazil or Argentina while the World Cup was on," he said.
