Findings from the Higher Education Statistics Agency for 1996-97 reveal that:
Universities in England reported an overall surplus of Pounds 140 million, up 1.5 per cent over the previous year
Universities in Northern Ireland reported an overall deficit of Pounds 2.3 million, down 1 per cent compared with the previous year
Universities in Scotland reported an overall surplus of Pounds 3.2 million, up 0.3 per cent over the previous year.
