The Royal Society of Chemistry

1997 silver medal awards have been presented to the following: Analytical reactions and analytical reagents: Ramaier Narayanaswamy, professor at UMIST, in recognition of his novel work in terms of new chemical reactions and reagents, including applications in the development of fibre-optic based sensors.

Chromatography and separation chemistry: Keith Bartle, professor at the University of Leeds, in recognition of his role in developing high-resolution separation procedures for complex mixtures of organic chemicals by coupling different separation methods together.

Organometallic chemistry: David Cole-Hamilton, University of St Andrews, for his research on organometallic compounds as catalysts and precursors to new electronic materials.

Main group chemistry: Derek Woollins, professor at Loughborough University, whose interests centre on the use of sulphur and phosphorus chemistry and development of new phosphorus-sulphur based ligand systems.

Photochemistry: Andrew Gilbert, professor at Reading University, for his outstanding work on the mechanism and application to synthesis of the photocycloaddition reactions of aromatic compounds.

Synthetic organic chemistry: Anthony Barrett, Imperial College, London, for outstanding research into finding out the three- dimensional structure and making two important naturally occurring chemicals.

Tertiary education: Tony Rest, senior lecturer at the University of Southampton, for his work in making high-quality video resources in chemistry available and easily accessible to lecturers and students in the laboratory and lecture theatre.
