The number of nurses in training has fallen by 15 per cent in the past four years, says the English National Board for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting. About 45,000 nurses are in training, compared with 53,000 in 1994. The figures appear to undermine the government's promise to provide an extra 15,000 nurses and 6,000 training places over the next three years.
