University of Wales Institute, Cardiff Antony Chapman, professor of psychology and pro vice-chancellor at the University of Leeds, has been appointed principal and chief executive from September 1. He will succeed Derek Winslow on his retirement.

University of Hertfordshire

Peter Lines, dean of the faculty of engineering, has been appointed pro vice-chancellor.

Youth Music Trust

Gavin Henderson, principal of Trinity College of Music and artistic director of Dartington International Summer School, has been appointed by the culture secretary as trust chairman.

Bournemouth University

David Jones, professor and former head of academic services, has been appointed head of the business school.

Betty Kershaw, president of the Royal College of Nursing, has been appointed chief officer nursing and social care.

Thames Valley University

Swraj Paul, founder and chairman of the Caparo Group, has been appointed pro vice-chancellor.

Robert Dyson, professor and deputy dean, will take on the role of dean at the business school, succeeding Bob Galliers.

Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council

Five appointments to the council have been made: John Graham, secretary and head of the agriculture, environment and fisheries department at the Scottish Office; Brian Follett, vice-chancellor of the University of Warwick; Michael Calvert, general manager of CWS Agriculture and chairman of the Sustainable Livestock LINK Programme Management; Linda Partridge, Weldon professor of biometry, University College, London, and director for the centre for ecology and evolution; Peter Schroeder, professor and director of research and development for Nestle R&D Centre, York.
