Possibly taking their cue from memories of the furore created in the early 1980s when Sir Keith Joseph forced the Social Science Research Council to transform itself into the less trendy-lefty sounding Economic and Social Research Council, the present government seems to have gone about the same task by stealth. Or is it merely a Freudian slip that The THES recently received a conference announcement from a body calling itself the Economical and Social Research Council?
