Women took the majority of first-class honours and upper second degrees in Malaysian universities this year. But what concerned Malaysia more was that they were also non-Malay, mostly Chinese and some Indian-Malaysian. Many Malay intellectuals blamed the continuing poor local performance on "too much time spent on Islamic religious activities".
