The Department of Health, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the Environment Agency and the Health and Safety Executive are issuing a joint call for outline research proposals to provide further basic understanding and improvement of the processes involved in the inactivation of the agents of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs).

Research areas might include:

* theoretical and modelling approaches on the processes and prediction of inactivation

* physical and structural studies of the agent, before, during and after inactivation

* kinetic studies of inactivation

* improved validation of inactivation via bioassay or alternative diagnostic procedures zadjuncts or alternatives to existing inactivation methods

* factors influencing resistance to inactivation

Call for Proposals

ESF Workshops Spearheading European Basic Biomedical and Clinical Research - 1999 Awards for exploratory workshops with the aim of identifying emerging fields requiring immediate action at a European level.

Workshops should:

* initiate the exchange of knowledge and experiences between European research teams in an emerging area of research;

* help establish new collaborative links between scientists of various disciplines (basic, clinical, etc.);

ADVERTISEMENT

* provide an opportunity for scientists to explore the possibility of preparing research funding applications for submission to the EU or other European funding bodies or to the ESF itself.

Applications may concern any emerging field of biomedical and clinical research.

There is no specific application form. It is therefore important to follow carefully the guidelines given below:

* Five copies of the application in English should be submitted and provide the following information:

* Summary (max. 1,000 words) and abstract (max. 50-70 words) of proposed research topic and intended outcome;

* Clear justification of the need for European collaboration;
