Scottish Parliament ministry of education and enterprise

September 25, 1998

Jim Wallace, leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, has called for a joint ministry of education and enterprise under the Scottish Parliament.

He told the conference that the culture of enterprise should should be taught in schools, universities and teacher training colleges. "Each of our universities should have an enterprise park attached to it," he said. "We must not export our academic excellence for others to develop, we should be reaping the commercial benefit in Scotland.''

The link between delivering quality education at every stage and a having successful enterprise economy was as obvious as it was necessary, Mr Wallace continued. "That is why we shall be consulting in the months ahead on the establishment of a department of education and enterprise as a key ministry in the Scottish executive."
