South African students face steep fee rises next year as universities struggle to make ends meet. While tough debt-collecting measures have reduced a total R500 million (Pounds 50 million) student debt at 21 universities, cuts to state funding, non-payment of fees and a drop in student numbers are causing a squeeze. Fee rises range from 5.4 per cent at Vista to 9.5 per cent at Free State University.
