Sir Alan Budd, 61, former chief economic adviser to the Treasury, has been elected provost of Queen's College, Oxford. He will succeed Geoffrey Marshall, who retires next July.

Newscaster Trevor McDonald, 59, has been appointed chancellor of South Bank University in London. He will replace Christopher McLaren when he retires next autumn.

The Further Education Development Agency has appointed three directors: Clive Caseley, former director of appeals and marketing at the charity MIND, as director of communications; Jeff Glasgow, former director of finance and administration at Gateshead College, as director of corporate services; and Ursula Howard, former director of external relations and learning development, as director of research and development.

John Bell, a retired head teacher and member of Bradford University's council for 21 years, has been appointed pro vice-chancellor of the University of Bradford.

Jane Longmore, head of the school of historical, social and cultural studies at St Mary's College, Twickenham, will become head of humanities at the University of Greenwich next spring.

Robert Knight, lecturer in German at Loughborough University, has been chosen by the Austrian government to investigate Austria's role in the Holocaust, replacing a leading member of the Historians' Commission, who withdrew at short notice.
