More than two thirds of university academics are required to teach. Figures released last week by Parliament show the percentage of university academics who engage purely in research was 34.4 per cent in 1990, 28.3 per cent in 1994, 29.5 per cent in 1995 and 29.6 in 1996. The change could be due to the creation of new universities in 1992.
