Lord Glenamara, 86, chancellor at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, has been given an honorary doctorate of civil law at the University of Newcastle.
Gilbert Smith, vice-chancellor at Northumbria, has been awarded an honorary doctorate from the State University of Management, Moscow.
Author Michael Holroyd has received an honorary doctorate of letters at the London School of Economics and Serge Moscovici, professor emeritus of social psychology at the Ecoles des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris, received an honorary doctorate of science.
Stephen Holgate, Medical Research Council clinical professor of immunopharmacology at the University of Southampton, has become joint winner of the $200,000 King Faisal international prize for medicine with Patrick Holt, senior principal research fellow at the National Research Council of Australia.
This year's Pounds 1,000 Longman-History Today Book of the Year Prize is shared by Amanda Vickery, for her book The Gentleman's Daughter, and Michael Richards, author of A Time of Silence.
The new Longman-History Today New Generation Book of the Year prize was awarded to The History News, Medicine by Phil Gates.
Mike Townsend, associate dean at the University of Wolverhampton School of Languages and European Studies has received an honorary doctorate from Tyumen State University in Western Siberia.
