The debate on how best to assess clinical medical research in the 2001 research assessment exercise was partly resolved this week with an agreement for sub-panels. A meeting, including the Higher Education Funding Council for England, the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals and the Council of Heads of Medical Schools, recommended that the three clinical medical units of assessment be divided into sub-panels that would each publish their ratings.
