Eight students from minority background are suing the University of California at Berkeley for discriminatory admissions procedures.
They were turned down despite very high scores on standardised tests and argue that new rules giving added weight to "advanced placement" courses are unfair because such courses are rarely available to minority students. Chancellor Robert Berdahl vigorously denies the charges.
