A government survey has found that fewer than half of all American teachers consider themselves prepared for the demands of working in public schools - raising standards, handling students with special needs or from diverse cultural backgrounds, and using technology. The teachers surveyed blamed university teaching programmes. "Teacher-education and professional-development programmes are not addressing the realities found in today's classroom," said US education secretary Richard Riley.
