The Austrian government has promised the University of Vienna money for more research on the causes and prevention of avalanches in the Alps. This follows the avalanche disaster in the Tyrolean village of Galtur in which 38 people lost their lives. Researchers have set up computer simulations and analysis of hundreds of avalanches over the past five years, but have lacked money for advanced software programs.
