Two young researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have won this year's Wilkinson Prize for Numerical Software for their FFTW (Fastest Fourier Transform in the West) software. Richard Field, vice-principal of the University of Edinburgh, presented Matteo Frigo and Steven Johnson with the $1,000 (Pounds 640) prize at the International Conference on Industrial and Applied Mathematics in Edinburgh. The winning entry, described by one external reviewer as the best for several years, is a library of C routines for the efficient computation of the Discrete Fourier Transform of real and complex data. www.nag.co.uk/other/
