Plans for the ¤39 million (Pounds 26 million) National College of Ireland in the Dublin docklands are to be scaled back after official documents revealed it has not been sanctioned by the department of education and science, essential as the ¤9 million core funding is needed to secure bank borrowing and private donations for the project. The department fears costs are spiralling, from ¤18 million early last year, to ¤25 million by November, and to ¤39 million by May.
The college insists the project will go ahead.
