Peter Mandelson, former trade and industry secretary, has been made vice-chair of the British Council, replacing Keith Vaz, Labour MP for Leicester East. The other vice-chair is Virginia Bottomley, Tory MP for Surrey South West.

Joan Smyth, chair and chief executive of the Equal Opportunities Commission for Northern Ireland and chair of the Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company, has also been elected to the British Council board.

Colin Eden, head of the department of management

science at the University of Strathclyde, has been appointed director of Strathclyde

Graduate Business School.

David Savage, former head of finance, property management and services at the UK Atomic Energy Authority, has been appointed director of finance at the University of Reading.

Glasgow Caledonian has appointed to its new executive team: Pamela Abbott, director of the school of social science at the University of Teesside, becomes pro vice-chancellor, learning; Gordon Dickson, dean of the faculty of health at Glasgow Caledonian, becomes pro vice-chancellor, development; Jennifer Rees, assistant principal (academic matters) at Bell College of Technology in Hamilton, becomes director of corporate planning; Alison Rooney, director of finance and planning with Registers of Scotland Executive Agency, becomes director of resources and administration; and Les Watson, dean of learning and information services at Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education, becomes director of information resources.

David Butcher, former professor of environmental management at the University of Central Lancashire, has joined Nottingham Trent University as professor of earth sciences in the new department formed from Brackenhurst Agricultural College.

Susan Walker, former regional water manager for the Environment Agency in the northwest of England, has been appointed a part-time professor in the geography department at Aberdeen University.

Robert Salters, senior lecturer in Hebrew and Old Testament studies at the University of St Andrews, has been elected a fellow of the Centre of Theological Inquiry in Princeton, New

Jersey. Dr Salters, who has been in Princeton since July, will return to St Andrews next year.

Simon Williams, deputy head of Oxford Brookes University Business School, has been appointed director of the school.
