On the move

David Caldwell, secretary of Robert Gordon University, has been appointed to the new title of director of the Committee of Scottish Higher Education Principals. He replaces Ronald Crawford, the secretary of Coshep.

Six new names have joined the board of the British Museum. They are: Hasan Askari, managing director of Barclays De Zoete Wedd; Christopher McCall, a senior chancery barrister specialising in private trusts, charities and taxation; Eric Salama, board director of marketing service group WPP Group; David Lindsell, senior audit partner of Ernst & Young and a member of the auditing practices board; the Countess of Dalkeith, producer of talks and documentaries for BBC radio; and archaeologist Anna Ritchie, trustee of the National Museums of Scotland.

Five new council members have been appointed to the Institute for Employment Studies. They are: Susie Parsons, chief executive of the Commission for Racial Equality; Brian Fox, director, senior civil service group at the Cabinet Office; Frances Newell, group creative director of Interbrand Newell and Sorrell; Robert Burgess, vice-chancellor of Leicester University; and Nigel Walmsley, chairman of Carlton Communications.

Nigel Palastanga, dean of the school of health-care studies at the University of Wales College of Medicine, has become the first non-medic or dentist to be appointed pro vice-chancellor.

John Davies, dean of the graduate school and professor of higher education management at Anglia Polytechnic University, has also been appointed a part-time professor at the University of Bath's school of management and the International Centre

for Higher Education Management.

De Montfort University has made the following appointments to its school of business: Louise Fitzgerald, former professor of organisational development at City University, to a chair in organisational behaviour; Monder Ram, former professor of small business at the University of Central England, professor of small business; and Mike Noon, former senior research fellow at Cardiff Business School, chair in human resource management.

Gordon Wright, head of the department of business and management at De Montfort's Milton Keynes campus, is to become director of programmes at the Ecole des Affaires de Paris on its merger with the Ecole Superieure de Commerce de Paris.

Nick Jennings, professor in the department of electronic engineering at Queen Mary and Westfield College, London, and Nigel Shadbolt, professor in intelligent systems at the University of Nottingham, will join the multimedia research group at the University of Southampton in January.
