General Travel Fund

The society has a fund from which grants are made available to assist eligible members in meeting the cost of attending scientific meetings or for short visits to other laboratories. The applicant must give evidence of active participation in the meeting. The society has decided to dedicate a substantial part of its annual travel grants to the 18th International Congress of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, to be held in Birmingham, in July. Applications to attend this meeting are now being considered by the travel grants committee. The latest date for receipt of these applications will be July 1. Members will be eligible to apply for a travel grant to attend this meeting after one year's membership and providing that they have not been awarded a travel grant within the last two years. The grant is available towards the cost of registration, accommodation, and subsistence as well as travel. Further information and application forms are available on the website. Joint projects under the European science exchange programme

The scheme supports joint projects between two individuals or two research groups, one in the UK and one in another European country, over two years. Funds are provided to cover international travel and subsistence for both project teams up to Pounds 6,000 per annum, to include up to Pounds 1,000 for consumables. The funding provided is small scale and may be seen as seed money for larger, long-term collaboration and further development. Applications may build on already existing collaborations. Annual deadlines: March 1; September 1.

Grants are intended for UK scientists of at least postdoctoral status and of proven research ability. Awards are granted for research in the natural and applied sciences. All visits funded by the grant must be made by collaborators of at least postdoctoral status.

Personal Research

Fellowships

The Royal Society of Edinburgh, with the support of the Scottish Executive Education and Lifelong Learning Department, invites applications for a limited number of personal research fellowships, to commence on October 1. Applicants must possess a doctorate or equivalent higher qualification and will be required to pursue research in any higher education institution, research institute or laboratory in Scotland. Only applicants who have obtained their doctorate or equivalent higher qualification prior to the date of appointment, will be considered. Applicants should normally be aged 32 or under, or have between two and six years post-doctoral experience. The personal research fellowships will normally be tenable for up to three years but, where appropriate to the research proposal, applications for two years will be considered. Once appointed, the fellows will be expected to devote their full time to research. While the fellowship may be in any discipline, preference will be given to research likely to enhance the transfer of ideas and technology from the research community into wealth creation and improvement of the quality of life. Such research includes priority areas identified by the Technology Foresight Programme. The annual salary for the personal research fellowships will be within the scales for research staff in higher education institutions, grades 1A-2 (currently in the range Pounds 17,238 - Pounds 26,429). Corresponding scales will apply to a fellowship held in either a research institute or industrial laboratory. Financial support, up to a maximum of Pounds 2,500 in the first year is available. This is made up of a Pounds 1,000 start-up grant and Pounds 1,500 towards expenses involved in carrying out the research, eg support for travel, attendance at approved meetings and the cost of minor equipment. In subsequent years the amount available will be up to a maximum of Pounds 1,000.

Deadline: March 10.

Application forms are not available after March 3.

Initiative on Gene Flow in Plants and

Microorganisms -

call for proposals

BBSRC and NERC wish to support research aimed at providing soundly based information on aspects of the impact of genetically modified crops and micro-organisms, including potential benefits, with particular emphasis on optimising the process of DNA insertion and understanding the consequences of gene flow.

Applications are invited from UK universities, approved academic analogues, and BBSRC and NERC sponsored institutes. Consortia-based multidisciplinary applications, and applications that include comparative studies between conventional varieties and agronomic practices and the GM alternatives, will be particularly welcomed. Consideration will be given, where an appropriate case can be clearly made, for longer-term projects up to a maximum of five years. Further particulars are obtainable on the BBSRC web site. There will be a workshop for potential applicants in Birmingham on March 6/7 to provide the opportunity to discuss the aims of the initiative and the preparation of proposals, including establishment of consortia. Further details and a registration form are available on the BBSRC web site. Applications

deadline: May 15.
