There were just over a quarter of a million students in higher education in Scotland in 1998-99, an increase of about 3.4 per cent over the previous year. The growth stems almost entirely from an increase in part-time students, who now make up 36 per cent of all students, according to provisional statistics from the Scottish Executive.
