The New Year's honours list contained a special surprise for lecturers' union leaders. Among those honoured with a CBE for services to higher education was their favourite adversary, Roger Ward, the Colleges' Employers' Forum supremo. More surprising, though, was the absence of any reference to Mr Ward's valuable contribution to further education, where he is delivering exactly the kind of services apparently so appreciated by the former polytechnics.
