A European consortium of academics and commercial companies is pushing ahead with the development of lower-cost and environmentally friendly display screens.
The BigFED (Field Emission Displays) consortium believes that a competitive solution to high-priced and less "green" plasma displays can be found by the use of Feds.
Tim Harper, organiser of the European Science Foundation's network in field emission technologies, said: "BigFED consists of both academics and commercial companies, to apply the best of European expertise to large-scale Fed technology. We believe that large area Feds can be a reality within five years. The spin-offs from this project should benefit the European display industry as a whole, and enhance its position in the world market."
