Durban don loses dismissal fight
An anthropology professor at the University of Natal has been recommended for immediate dismissal by a committee of inquiry that found her guilty of serious acts of misconduct. Caroline White, who launched a worldwide email campaign, has had her request for a R2.3 million (£212,483) "golden handshake” refused.
Gang who kidnapped rector jailed
Six gang members who kidnapped the rector of a Peruvian university at gunpoint have each been given prison sentences of 20 years. Abraham Zambrano Sayaverde, former rector of the Universidad Particular Inca Garcilaso de La Vega, was held for a ransom of 2 million soles (£397,000) in 1998. A former employee of the university was found guilty of having masterminded the operation.
