Modern language staff must let their students know how they will be assessed, according to national guidelines drawn up by a team of Ulster University researchers.
Pol O Dochartaigh, of UU's school of languages and literature, said staff must not expect students to pick up the language "by chance", but must target clearly defined areas for learning and clearly structure their teaching.
