International advisers get ethics code

February 2, 2001

Universities and colleges are adopting a code of ethics for international student advisers.

The code, drawn up by the UK Council for Overseas Student Affairs and the Association of International Student Advisers, will give advisers a professional framework, particularly regarding immigration matters.

Clive Saville, Ukcosa chief executive, said: "Giving advice to international students is a very distinct role. If you are advising in areas where you do not have the necessary expertise, you can end up with students being deported."

Universities UK and the Association of Colleges have endorsed the code.
